- Fewer yet costlier vehicles get stolen in Saxony-Anhalt
In Saxony-Anhalt, the number of reported vehicle thefts saw a slight decline in 2023. As per the German Insurance Association (GDV), 375 insured vehicles were taken in the region last year, which is 15 less than the tally from 2022.
The average payout by insurers for each theft in Saxony-Anhalt was close to 21,500 euros, as reported by the association. This represented a rise from around 20,000 euros the year prior, resulting in an overall loss of approximately 8 million euros for insurers. Statistically, there were roughly 4 cases of car theft per 10,000 insured vehicles in the state, matching the national average.
Nationwide, automobiles worth a staggering 310 million euros were swiped in 2023. The overall damage tallied to nearly the same amount, 310 million euros. On average, insurers shelled out almost 21,400 euros for each theft, marking a 6% increase from the previous year's figure.
As per the GDV, Berlin posed the highest risk of car theft. "Berlin continues to be the car thieves' epicenter, with a vehicle vanishing every 2 hours on average," GDV CEO Jörg Asmussen noted. The likelihood of car theft is considerably lower in southern Germany.
Despite the decline in reported vehicle thefts in Saxony-Anhalt, incidents of car theft still occur, making it essential for vehicle owners to take necessary precautions. Regrettably, car theft remains a significant issue, with Berlin reportedly having the highest number of car thefts, making it a hotspot for car thieves.
