Fewer unemployed people with disabilities - just a brief recovery?
The number of unemployed people with disabilities in Bavaria fell last year. Compared to the previous year, their number fell by 5 percent to 23,337, according to the latest Inclusion Barometer Work by Aktion Mensch and the Handelsblatt Research Institute. In the current year, however, the figure has been rising again since June and the economic weakness is worsening the chances of people with disabilities on the labor market.
The unemployment rate also shows that there are still no equal opportunities for people with disabilities on the job market, the study authors criticized on Thursday. In 2022, this was around 9 percent for people with disabilities - almost three times as high as the general rate.
The inclusion barometer also sees a problem in companies' unwillingness to hire. According to the survey, around 29,000 companies in Bavaria are required by law to offer at least five percent of their jobs to people with disabilities. However, only almost 39 percent filled all of the mandatory positions, it said. In fact, more than one in four companies employ no people with disabilities at all.
The labor market struggles to provide equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities, as evidenced by the persistently high unemployment rate of 9% for this group, nearly three times the general rate. Despite a brief decrease in the number of unemployed people with disabilities last year, the current economic situation is leading to an increase in unemployment figures again.
