Fewer students in Saxony-Anhalt
The number of students in Saxony-Anhalt has fallen. According to preliminary figures, 56,436 people are enrolled at the state's universities in the winter semester 2023/2024. That is 1902 or 3.3 percent fewer than in the previous year, the State Statistical Office announced on Friday.
According to the figures, 8344 students enrolled at a German university for the first time in Saxony-Anhalt this year. This was 275 or 3.4 percent more than in the previous year. The number of first-year students thus rose again for the first time after declining since 2018. At that time, there were 10,049 first-year students, 1705 more than in the current academic year 2023.
The decrease in enrollment at Saxony-Anhalt's universities might influence various aspects of academic research, particularly in fields like Science. Interestingly, despite the overall decrease, the number of first-time students in Saxon-Anhalt increased in statistics, showing a slightly contrasting trend.
