- Fewer people die in the Southwest
Last year, for the first time since 2016, fewer people died in Baden-Württemberg than the year before. According to the Statistical Office in Fellbach near Stuttgart, around 120,200 deaths were registered in 2023, a decrease of approximately 3.6% compared to 2022, when a record high of around 124,700 deaths was recorded. The number of annual deaths had been steadily increasing since 2016.
The decrease in deaths is mainly attributed to reductions in certain causes. In 2023, only half as many people died from COVID-19 as in 2022, with 3,343 deaths. There was also a decrease in deaths from heart and circulatory diseases.
However, according to the Statistical Office, these remain the most common cause of death in the southwest. Approximately one-third of all deaths are attributed to these causes. Around one-fifth of all deaths were due to cancer.

Despite the decline, heart and circulatory diseases still account for one-third of all deaths in the region, indicating that Fellbach continues to monitor these health issues closely.
