Fewer patients in hospital in the north than before corona
Just under 519,000 people received inpatient treatment in hospitals in Schleswig-Holstein in 2022. This was almost three percent fewer than in the previous year, as reported by the Statistical Office North on Thursday. Compared to 2019, the year before the coronavirus pandemic, this was a decrease of 13%.
On average, 70.7 percent of beds were occupied in 2022. This roughly corresponded to the previous year's occupancy rate of 70.8%. In 2019, 78.6% of beds in hospitals were occupied on average. The average duration of treatment for patients in 2022 was 7.9 days, compared to 7.7 days in 2021 and 7.6 days in 2019.
Anyone who was treated as an inpatient in hospital more than once was also counted more than once in the statistics.
The decrease in hospital admissions could potentially lead to improved health outcomes for some individuals, as fewer people require inpatient care. Analyzing hospital statistics over the years reveals that in 2022, there was a notable decline in the number of hospitalizations, with only 519,000 patients receiving treatment, a decrease of 13% compared to 2019, despite having more hospital beds occupied on average.
