- Fewer children and fewer deaths in the Saarland
In Saarland, the number of births is decreasing while deaths are declining. According to the Statistical Office of the Federation, a total of 7,769 children were born alive in the state in 2023.
The birth rate of 1.4 children per woman remained at the same level as in 2022, but the number of births decreased by 0.6 percent. For the second year in a row, Saarland has recorded a decline in births. In 2021, over 500 more children were born alive.
Similarly, the number of deaths compared to 2022 decreased by 5.5 percent: from 15,409 to 14,560 people. The average age at death, according to the Statistical Office of the Federation, was around 79 years.
Despite the decreasing births, Saarland's schools still welcome a significant number of new students each year, with 7,769 children joining the educational system in 2023. The decline in deaths also contributes to a growing elderly population, as fewer deaths at an average age of 79 result in fewer individuals leaving the population.
