Labor market - Fewer and fewer employees in Saxony's skilled trades

Fewer and fewer people are working in the skilled trades requiring registration in Saxony. In the third quarter of this year, the number was almost 5 percentage points below the average for 2020, the State Statistical Office announced on Tuesday. Compared to the same quarter in 2022, the decline amounted to 2.4 percent. All trades were affected, with the construction industry suffering the greatest decline of 5.3 percent. The statisticians did not provide absolute figures.

Turnover for the entire skilled trades sector in the third quarter was nominally 4.4 percent higher than in the same period last year. However, the high rates of price increases should be taken into account, according to the report. Price-adjusted data is not yet available.

The development of turnover varied between the different trade groups. There was an increase of 8.6 percent in the motor vehicle industry and 8 percent in the healthcare industry. In the main construction sector, turnover fell by 1.3% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The finishing trade increased its turnover by a nominal 6.7 percent.

In the face of declining employment in Saxony's skilled trades, particularly the construction industry with a 5.3% decrease, statistics reveal a need for skilled workers in these fields. This trend is concerning for the local labor market, as Kamenz, like other cities in Saxony, may struggle to fill these vacancies in the craft sector. The construction industry's downturn could have broader economic implications, potentially impacting related industries and businesses.
