Festivals - Festivals in Jena and Rudolstadt - Big names and more

For fans of world music and culture enthusiasts, the dates in the calendar have been marked for a long time: The starts of Kulturarena Jena and Rudolstadt Festival are at the door.

In Rudolstadt, all 20,000 permanent tickets for the self-proclaimed largest festival for Folk-, Roots- and Worldmusic in Germany have already been sold out. With a regular ticket price of 123 Euro for all four festival days, the entrance fees have been kept stable compared to last year, says Festival-Press-Spokeswoman Petra Rieß. "Basically, everything is getting more expensive and many organizers are suffering from low advance sales, but we are established and have our loyal audience." Tickets for ten Euro for day passes are still available, but they only apply to the area of the city that is played by street musicians.

Young Folk Orchestra and special focus

Approximately 120 bands and artists will be present at the festival from July 4th to 7th. The Youth Folk Orchestra is making its debut in Rudolstadt: For the first time, musicians between the ages of 12 and 25 will perform together with bagpipes, violins, and other instruments. Julian Marley, the son of Reggae-Legend Bob Marley, is performing the opening concert.

The focus country this year is Germany. "We are on a quest to find out what German music is and show with the artists how diverse it is," says Rieß. The Bavarian Hip-Hop band Dicht und Ergreifend and the Mannheimer musician Paula Carolina are among them, but also the singer Ki'luanda with African roots from Nuremberg and the long-time resident Ukrainian musician Leléka.

Silvermond-Tickets sold out in Jena, other tickets still available

The Kulturarena Jena offers more than 30 concerts again from July 3rd to August 18th. "For larger acts like Silbermond, Element of Crime, Faber, or also Giant Rooks, the tickets are already sold out," says Kulturarena-Spokeswoman Anna Fuhlbrügge. For smaller and less well-known artists, the advance sales have not been as strong yet.

The Kulturarena, which is run by a municipal enterprise, refers to rising costs. "Personnel, technology, everything is significantly more expensive, that affects all organizers," says Fuhlbrügge. The Kulturarena, which is behind a municipal enterprise, is not aimed at making a profit. "We calculate so that we don't end up with a minus and try to keep ticket prices as low as possible." The different ticket prices for various artists are due to the respective contract conditions.

A well-known actor from an Oscar-winning film

More than 30 concerts are taking place this year, among others, The Notwist, Olli Schulz and Kettcar are there. Visitors can experience an unusual format with The Woods of Birnam. "That's not a normal concert, but a special production with theater and interpretations of Shakespeare texts," says Fuhlbrügge. Actor and musician Christian Friedel, who is known from the Oscar-winning film "The Zone of Interest," is participating.
