Ferries canceled due to expected storm
Lower Saxony is facing a stormy end to the working week. According to the German Weather Service (DWD) on Wednesday, strong to stormy gusts are expected on Thursday. The North Sea coast is expected to experience severe storms. According to the forecast, gale-force gusts are also possible there in isolated cases. The stormy winds from the west and northwest are expected to subside by Friday evening.
Due to the stormy weather, the Storm Surge Warning Service of the Lower Saxony Water Management, Coastal Defence and Nature Conservation Agency (NLWKN) in Norden predicted the risk of several light storm surges along the coast on Wednesday.
According to the forecast, the evening high tide on Thursday, the morning high tide on Friday and the evening high tide on Friday could be between one and one and a quarter meters higher than the mean high tide. Beaches, foreshores and harbor areas could then be flooded.
Due to the expected higher water levels, travelers must expect changes to ferry services to and from the East Frisian Islands. Deutsche Bahn, which operates the ferry service to and from the island of Wangerooge, announced on Wednesday that ferry services would be completely suspended on Friday. On Thursday and Saturday, some ferries were to be canceled or run at different times. There should also be changes to the ferry service to the island of Spiekeroog.
According to NLWKN data, light storm surges occur statistically up to ten times in the season between September and April according to the long-term average. As a rule, they are not a major challenge for coastal protection structures.
The stormy weather predicted for Thursday is set to disrupt shipping activities, with gale-force gusts expected to hit the North Sea coast. As a result, Deutsche Bahn has announced the suspension of ferry services to and from the island of Wangerooge on Friday, while some services to Spiekeroog will be canceled or run at different times on Thursday and Saturday.
