Fence around Görlitzer Park: alliance develops alternative concept
In the discussion about security in Görlitzer Park in Berlin-Kreuzberg, neighborhood initiatives and local politicians want to prevent the fencing of the park planned by the Senate. To this end, they are proposing a different concept for the entire area surrounding the park in several districts. This is based on earlier plans with more social work and patrols by so-called park runners and is to be presented in detail next week, as was reported on Wednesday. Instead of the fence around the park planned from the beginning of 2024, social responses are needed, according to an alliance "Görli zaunfrei" made up of several initiatives. The district office led by the Green Party is also involved.
Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) and Senator of the Interior Iris Spranger (SPD) had announced that the wall around the park would be torn down and replaced by a fence with entrance gates. The gates can then be locked at night. The debate about security in the park had flared up again after a young woman was raped by several men in June.
The Greens, the Left Party and also parts of the SPD criticize that closing the park at night will only lead to drug dealing not disappearing, but becoming even stronger in the surrounding residential areas. An internet petition launched in September against the fence has so far received almost 3,800 votes.
The alliance "Görli zaunfrei" advocates for social responses instead of the Senate's planned fence around Görlitzer Park, believing that this will address the issue more effectively. The Senate, led by the CDU's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner and the SPD's Senator of the Interior Iris Spranger, originally planned to replace the torn-down park wall with a fenced area with nightly lockable gates.
