Police operation - Federal police shoot down suspected knife attacker

A man who is reported to have attacked three German federal police officers with a knife on Sunday near Pegnitz, close to Nuremberg, has died after a police shooting. The man reportedly succumbed to his injuries at the scene, according to a spokesperson for Middle Franconia police in the evening. Immediate first aid efforts could not save his life.

The attacker reportedly approached an on-patrol car of the federal police. Upon exiting the vehicle, the officers were then targeted, according to the spokesperson. "A knife was involved in the incident," the spokesperson added. The officers reportedly remained unharmed. Regarding the number of shots fired, who fired, and where the shots hit the man, the spokesperson made no comments. Nor did they provide information on the identity of the deceased or the motives behind his attack.

Earlier, the police had informed X that a police shooting had occurred following an attack on federal police officers. In another post on X, it was stated that a larger operation was underway. "We have numerous forces on site. Please avoid the area. There is no danger to the public." According to the police spokesperson, the area in front of the train station was cordoned off.
