Federal list for European elections: SPD elects state leader and candidates

The SPD state party conference begins this Saturday (10.00 a.m.) in Mainz with a minute's silence for the victims in Ukraine and Israel. Chairman Roger Lewentz, who has been in office since 2012, wants to run for office for the last time. If re-elected, his task would be to organize his successor in the two years until 2025 at the latest, the 60-year-old had said.

Finance Minister Doris Ahnen and Labor and Social Affairs Minister Alexander Schweitzer are running again as deputies. State Parliament President Hendrik Hering is no longer running for this position. Instead, parliamentary group leader Sabine Bätzing-Lichtenthäler is running.

"Against egoism. Strengthen cohesion" is the theme of both the party conference and the main motion. A clear distinction against the right is another focus of the party conference.

This will take place at the same time as the state representatives' assembly for Europe. The SPD's lead candidate and Vice-President of the European Parliament, Katarina Barley, will give a welcome address. In addition, four candidates will be elected for the federal list for the European elections. Daniel Stich, former Secretary General and currently Ministerial Director in the Ministry of Health, and MEP Karsten Lucke will be competing for the promising first place. A total of more than 400 delegates are expected to attend.

The SPD will elect four candidates for the federal list for the European elections, including Daniel Stich and Karsten Lucke. At the state party conference, the SPD emphasizes the importance of cohesion and distinguishes itself from the right.
