UN Climate Change Conference - Federal Environment Agency President: Science finally heard
The President of the Federal Environment Agency, Dirk Messner, supports the UN Climate Change Conference 's call to move away from fossil fuels. "The international community is finally recognizing what science has been calling for for a long time," Messner told the German Press Agency on Wednesday. The fossil fuel era must come to an end in order to prevent dangerous climate change, secure prosperity and maintain future prospects for future generations.
For the first time at a UN climate conference, the global community is calling for a move away from fossil fuels. However, the clear phase-out previously demanded by more than 100 countries is not included in the final text adopted in Dubai. However, the text also left back doors open - such as the continued use of gas and the use of controversial technologies for storing and capturing CO2.
"The hard work of implementing global climate neutrality at a much faster pace must now be driven forward on many other stages: the G20 countries, which are responsible for around 80 percent of global emissions, must agree on joint climate protection efforts," demanded Messner. Among other things, developing countries must be supported in advancing climate protection and adaptation. "The EU can be a pioneer in the realignment of the global economy if it consistently develops its European Green Deal."
