Awards - Federal Cross of Merit for virologist Ciesek

Virologist Sandra Ciesek has been awarded the Cross of Merit First Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Director of the Institute of Medical Virology at Frankfurt University Hospital received the Cross of Merit for her "pioneering scientific and exemplary social commitment", as announced by the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs in Wiesbaden on Wednesday. She was presented with the award by Social Affairs Minister Kai Klose (Greens).

Even before the pandemic hit people with full force, Ciesek and her team had proven that even symptom-free people can transmit the virus, Klose emphasized in his laudatory speech. Ciesek had conveyed her knowledge to the general public in an understandable and patient manner, particularly noticeable in the NDR Corona podcast with Christian Drosten.

Ciesek studied medicine at the University of Göttingen and Hannover Medical School from 1997 to 2003. Since 2019, she has been Director of the Institute of Medical Virology at Frankfurt University Hospital and Professor of Medical Virology at Goethe University.
