Federal Court of Justice ruled on losses replacement in sports bets

The player participated in betting at Sportwetten between 2013 and 2018. At that time, online lotteries were prohibited on the internet, but online sports betting was allowed if the providers had a license. Tipico, based in Malta, had applied for a license in Germany but had not received it at that time. In a preliminary assessment during the hearing in June, the Federal Court of Justice indicated that it could decide in favor of the player.

The player's case was brought before the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe. If the player's arguments hold, they might receive a substitute verdict, overturning the initial rulings on their losses. Despite Tipico not having a license in Germany during the player's bets with Sportsbet, the Federal Court of Justice (Germany) is considering whether the player is entitled to compensation for any financial losses incurred.
