Government - Federal Council President Schwesig meets Brazil's President

Federal Council President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) will meet Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Berlin on Monday. "I am very much looking forward to this meeting," said the Minister President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on Sunday. "It is a great honor, because it is something special when a president visits the Bundesrat during his visit to Germany."

Lula da Silva is on a state visit to Germany from Monday to Wednesday. The topic of economic relations is expected to play a major role. Schwesig sees good opportunities for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. "Some companies from our state are already active on the Brazilian market, for example Mele from Torgelow, Weber Maschinenbau from Neubrandenburg and Airsense Analytics from Schwerin," said the head of government. She sees opportunities for expanding cooperation in areas such as the expansion of renewable energies and waste management. "This applies to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as well as the whole of Germany."

In January, the head of the Schwerin State Chancellery, Patrick Dahlemann (SPD), visited Brazil with a business delegation. He plans to take part in a German-Brazilian business forum in Berlin on Monday.

German business is calling for the free trade agreement between the South American economic community Mercosur and the EU to be concluded quickly. The EU has been in talks with Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay for years. However, an agreement in principle from 2019 has not been implemented due to ongoing concerns - for example regarding rainforest protection.
