Administration - Federal authorities lack staff: a quarter of jobs unfilled

The establishment of federal authorities in eastern Germany is stalling, partly due to a lack of personnel. Around a quarter of the approximately 8570 planned jobs in the five eastern German states could not be filled by the end of 2022, according to a spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior on Friday. 6340 positions were therefore filled. Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB) had previously reported on this.

Since 2019, more than 30 new institutions, branches or offices have been added in Thuringia, Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. These include, for example, several branches of the German Aerospace Center as well as offices of authorities such as the Federal Network Agency, Federal Office of Administration or Federal Office of Economics and Export Control. The background to this is that the federal government wants to locate more of its own authorities and institutions in the east and thus ensure equal living conditions.

The Federal Government Commissioner for Eastern Germany, Carsten Schneider, told RBB: "It would have been wise to locate even more of these federal authorities earlier. This is now a correction that comes late. But I hope not too late."

The Federal Ministry of the Interior stated that there are many reasons for the vacancies. "The shortage of skilled workers is certainly a major challenge when it comes to filling vacancies quickly." The epidemic situation, organizational or personnel planning reasons may also have delayed the recruitment process in recent years.
