European Soccer Tournament - Fears over pyrotechnics during the European Championship's opening event.
Munich's district administration is worried about the supposed use of fireworks during the start of the European Football Championship's opening ceremony in the city's arena. In January 2024, the corresponding fire department asked Euro 2024 GmbH, the event organizer, not to use fireworks for the ceremony, as reported by the authorities to ARD "Sportschau."
The European Football Union UEFA claimed that the opening ceremony before the match between Germany and Scotland on June 14th would "be strictly regulated" and would involve "established manufacturers and professional organizations" in accordance with the country's health and safety standards.
The organization disclosed the ceremony's plans and mentioned the usage of different pyrotechnic gadgets as "special effects." For example, there will be around 60 pyrotechnic objects to be fired off by hand.
The fire department in the district government mentioned "the effects on the fans, whose illegal usage of pyrotechnics frequently leads to particular dangers and injuries." Nevertheless, this doesn't justify a ban as long as "the products are certified, the personnel operating them are certified, and no dangers arise from this."
Using pyrotechnics in German arenas without permission is forbidden, which has generated conflicts among parts of the fans and associations frequently. The major use of fireworks by fans at the DFB Cup final in Berlin between Bayer Leverkusen and 1. FC Kaiserslautern caused outrage. Both clubs anticipate significant fines.
