FDP MP calls for violence in schools to be recorded
Since the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, the State Institute for Teacher Training and School Development (LI) has received 17 requests for advice from Hamburg's schools on how to deal with the situation in the Middle East. In addition, around 200 teachers have been informed and advised in various training courses, according to the Senate's response to a minor question from FDP member of parliament Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein.
However, the question about the number of violent crimes at schools in connection with the Gaza war remained unanswered. On the one hand, acts of violence are only recorded by the authorities on a school year basis, on the other hand, the "Guidelines for reporting and dealing with incidents of violence at Hamburg schools" do not provide for a survey of "individual motivations".
According to the Senate's response, the police registered 300 acts of violence at schools in the first three quarters of this year - including, however, those that took place on school grounds but were not necessarily related to pupils or teachers - for example, outside of lesson times. For the past school year 2022/23, 201 acts of violence were reported to the school authorities.
These figures alone "and the rampant anti-Semitism, especially among young people, since the brutal Hamas attack on Israel make it urgently necessary to find out more about incidents of violence at schools in a timely manner", said von Treuenfels-Frowein. However, the school authorities are making no effort to record details. "That must change: Hamburg's schools need a monthly record of violence in schoolyards and classrooms, if possible." In addition, a differentiated determination of motivations is overdue.
"Only when this knowledge is available can more targeted countermeasures be introduced. To this end, it would be useful to bring in external experts who could provide unbiased help," she said.
Despite the escalating conflicts and the impact of the ongoing war in the Middle East, especially the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, there has been a lack of comprehensive data on incidents of violence in schools with potential ties to citizenship-related conflicts. The need for more detailed and regular records is being emphasized by FDP MP Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein, who believes that understanding the motivations behind these incidents is crucial for implementing effective intervention strategies.
