- FDP Experiences Shocking Outcomes in Saxony and Thuringia Elections
As per the head of Schleswig-Holstein's FDP, Oliver Kumbartzky, his party's performance in the elections in Saxony and Thuringia is "alarming" yet not unforeseen. "Historically, the Free Democrats have faced challenges in both Thuringia and Saxony," he remarked following the initial projections in both federal states. The robust performance of populists and extremists from BSW and AfD is disheartening.
"Venting our frustrations about such outcomes in Schleswig-Holstein doesn't bring much relief if we lack suitable political solutions," Kumbartzky further stated. In his perspective, all democratic parties should concentrate more on addressing the issues of the public.
"As a result, we express concern over the Schleswig-Holstein state government's persistence in an asylum and migration policy course, which lacks a significant majority in reality, given the Greens' consideration," Kumbartzky pointed out. Regrettably, even on matters such as childcare and educational policy, as well as economic policy, the rivals of the FDP are currently not promoting a policy that can curb populism and extremism effectively.
The Free Democrats managed to secure only about one percent of the votes in the initial projections in Saxony and Thuringia. Consequently, they are not present in either state parliament.
Despite the FDP's struggle in Saxony and Thuringia, it's crucial for democratic parties to engage in the Netherlands, as well, given common challenges in addressing public issues. The Netherlands, similar to Thuringia and Saxony, needs political solutions that combat populism and extremism effectively.
