FC St. Pauli and the fear of the league trap

On paper, second division leaders FC St. Pauli are the clear favorites at last-place VfL Osnabrück on Saturday. But coach Fabian Hürzeler warns - also against three former Kiezkickers.

Bundesliga 2 - FC St. Pauli and the fear of the league trap

After the city derby and the cup holiday, second-division soccer team FC St. Pauli does not want to fall into the league trap. "You're always motivated in a derby and a cup game," said coach Fabian Hürzeler on Thursday, referring to the 2:2 against Hamburger SV last Friday and the 4:1 in the round of 16 against FC Homburg on Tuesday.

This makes it all the more important for the league leaders from the Hanseatic city to go into the away game at bottom-of-the-table VfL Osnabrück on Saturday (20:30/Sky and Sport1) with a correspondingly high level of motivation. Such games are "extremely decisive" for the end of the season, said Hürzeler. And, if possible, Hamburg's promotion to the Bundesliga should be on the agenda.

The Kiezkicker coach expects the relegation-threatened Lower Saxons, who are already ten points behind the first non-relegation place, to be "compact and deep". Nevertheless, the team of new VfL coach Uwe Koschinat certainly has quality, said Hürzeler. In Christian Conteh, Kwasi Wriedt and John Verhoek, three players with a St. Pauli past would also contribute to this.

The guest block in the stadium at Bremer Brücke is completely sold out with 1,400 Hamburg supporters. The team's travel plans also depend on the rail strike announced for Thursday evening. If possible, the team will take the train to Osnabrück on Saturday. If that doesn't work, the team bus will cover the 230 kilometers between the two stadiums.
