FC Bayern makes goalkeeper decision: Ulreich stays
FC Bayern Munich and goalkeeper Sven Ulreich are expected to work together for another season. According to Sky, the club and the 35-year-old are aiming to extend his contract before Christmas. Ulreich recently impressed as a substitute for Manuel Neuer, whose contract, like Ulreich's, expires at the end of the season.
Ulreich played for Munich from 2015 to 2020 and returned to the south on July 1, 2021 after a brief spell at Hamburger SV. Most recently, he was loudly celebrated at Bayern's annual general meeting with chants of "Ulle, Ulle" - no star received more applause.
"I hope he heard that. Maybe that will make it a little easier for him to sign his contract extension," said CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen.
In addition to Ulreich, the Munich team will be relying on Israeli Daniel Peretz as goalkeeper behind Neuer. Ulreich has played twelve games for FC Bayern this season, keeping three clean sheets. He repeatedly made strong saves in difficult situations.
Peretz, who was signed in the summer, made one appearance this season in Munich's 4-0 win over Preußen Münster in the first round of the cup. Neuer has been back in goal since the 8-0 win against SV Darmstadt 98 in the Bundesliga at the end of October.
"I'm delighted that Ulle is holding up the way he is," coach Thomas Tuchel had praised the backup shortly before Neuer's comeback. The homogeneous and strong goalkeeping team is producing top performances. "It's really not that easy. No matter how well you keep, there's always the question of Manuel Neuer. Of course, it helps enormously that they value each other so much."
In addition to Neuer and Ulreich, the contracts of Thomas Müller, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Bouna Sarr also expire at the end of the season. Müller is set to extend his contract, while Choupo-Moting and Sarr are set to leave.
In the Bundesliga, FC Bayern Munich's goalkeeping situation is secure with Ulreich and Neuer, as the club aims to extend Ulreich's contract before the end of the year. Despite interest in transfers, the club is satisfied with Ulreich's performances and his role as a reliable backup for Neuer.
