Bundesliga - FC Bayern looks to defensive players for winter transfers
With a view to the upcoming winter transfer period, club president Herbert Hainer has expressed caution regarding possible activities by FC Bayern Munich. Coach Thomas Tuchel primarily sees a need for action in the defensive area. He has repeatedly described the current squad of the German soccer record champions as quantitatively tight.
"We are always looking at how we can further strengthen our squad. We also did this to a sufficient extent in the summer transfer period. Of course, our sporting management also looks to see whether it makes sense to bring in someone else in the winter," said Hainer, adding: "The fact that we are looking around in the defensive area is no great mystery."
There would be enough money to strike again after the 100-million transfer of goalscorer Harry Kane. "Thank God FC Bayern is in the economic season where it can always react on the market if it wants to," said supervisory board chairman Hainer. "But of course it has to make sense." In the case of 30-year-old Kane, the club had achieved "a very good coup".
In the summer,Tuchel had primarily wanted a defensive-minded six-man for the midfield. The signing of Portugal's João Palhinha (28) fell through on the last day of the transfer window because Fulham FC did not release him without a replacement. "We regretted that," said Hainer. Palhinha then extended his contract with Fulham.
However, Bayern have had a bottleneck in the first half of the season so far, particularly in the center-back position due to various injury-related absences.
