Champions League - FC Bayern ahead of round of 16 draw: "Not afraid of anyone"
After their 3-0 win in the Bundesliga, FC Bayern Munich are looking forward to the draw for the last 16 of the Champions League. "Of course I'm optimistic that we'll get an opponent we can beat," said President Herbert Hainer. "On the other hand, I'm convinced that if our team brings what it showed today onto the pitch, then we don't need to be afraid of any opponent." The draw for the round of 16 will be made on Monday (12.00 noon) at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
Munich had beaten VfB Stuttgart convincingly in the top match on Sunday. Harry Kane and the equally strong South Korean Minjae Kim scored the goals for the serial champions. FC Bayern are second in the table, four points behind Bayer Leverkusen, but have played one game less than the Rhinelanders.
There are six possible opponents in the last sixteen of the Champions League, including three from Italy. The German soccer champions could be drawn against Italian champions SSC Napoli, last year's finalists Inter Milan or Lazio Roma. "There are no wishes," said coach Thomas Tuchel on Sunday evening.
Another clash with Paris Saint-Germain is also possible. Bayern beat France's top team led by star striker Kylian Mbappé, who finished second in Group F behind Borussia Dortmund, in the round of 16 last season. Bayern's other potential opponents are FC Porto and PSV Eindhoven. Group opponents FC Copenhagen, RB Leipzig and Dortmund were also eliminated as Munich's opponents in the draw. A German duel would only be possible from the quarter-finals onwards.
The round of 16 will be played in the new year. The first legs will take place on February 13/14/20/21, the second legs on March 5/6/12/13. As top of the group, Bayern will first play away from home.
