FC Augsburg signs new assistant coach from Denmark
FC Augsburg's new coach Jess Thorup gets his assistant of choice. As the Bundesliga club announced on Wednesday, Jacob Friis will be the first assistant coach under his Danish compatriot with immediate effect. The 46-year-old moves to Augsburg from Danish first division club Viborg FF, where he was head coach. He signed a contract until June 30, 2025, while Thorup's contract has the same term. As the successor to Enrico Maaßen, he picked up seven points in three games.
"I am delighted that we have been able to sign Jacob Friis, the ideal solution for the position of assistant coach. We are convinced that Jacob will bring his experience as a soccer coach to FCA in the best possible way. He will be an important support for our head coach Jess Thorup and will complement our staff both professionally and personally," explained Augsburg's sporting director Marinko Jurendic.
Friis said of his move: "Many will wonder why I am giving up a head coach position for an assistant coach position. But I was convinced by the FCA's path, with which I can identify 100 percent. In addition, the prospect of working in the Bundesliga is a great opportunity and challenge for me."
FC Augsburg's new assistant coach, Jacob Friis, has a rich background in Bundesliga soccer, having previously coached in Denmark's first division. His new role sees him working under fellow Danish coach Jess Thorup in the Bundesliga.
