- Father Charged After Baby Dies
For the sudden death of a two-month-old infant in Neubrandenburg, the investigating authorities believe the father of the child is responsible. Therefore, a 29-year-old man has been charged with bodily harm resulting in death, a spokesperson for the state prosecutor's office in Neubrandenburg confirmed. The "Nordkurier" had previously reported on this.
The German Criminal Code provides for a prison sentence of not less than three years for such crimes, with sentences ranging from one to ten years in lesser cases. The start date of the trial at the regional court is still unclear.
The child was admitted to the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer Clinic in Neubrandenburg in mid-January and died there shortly after. As there were indications of external influence, the state prosecutor's office initiated investigations. A court-ordered medical examination revealed internal injuries that could be explained by the child being shaken, it was reported. As the state prosecutor's office announced in early April, there were indications that the father could have caused the fatal shaking trauma.
The 29-year-old was taken into provisional custody after the child's death, but the arrest warrant was suspended in February under certain conditions. Since then, the man has had to regularly report to the police and comply with other summons.
According to the state prosecutor's office, the man has more children with the mother of the deceased baby. During the bail review hearing, the suspect reportedly spoke of his closeness and social bond with the child's mother. The state prosecutor's office also assessed the previously assumed flight risk as low due to this relationship.
The 29-year-old man is currently facing charges at The Court of Justice due to the accusations of bodily harm resulting in the death of his two-month-old child. If found guilty, the severity of the sentence could be determined by The Court of Justice, as per the German Criminal Code.
