District of Leipzig - Fatal pool party: Defendants regret the consequences
Following the death of two men in a pool at a private Christmas party in the district of Leipzig, the defendants have expressed their regret and apologized. They are deeply shocked by what happened after dry ice was added to the pool and they are extremely sorry, the defendants told the Leipzig District Court on Tuesday through their defense lawyers. They had not been aware of the dangers of dry ice.
The 45 and 47-year-old men had tipped a block of dry ice into the self-built outdoor pool in Gerichshain in the late evening of December 21, 2019. This caused carbon dioxide to collect above the surface of the water and the 20 and 39-year-old men fell unconscious and drowned. A third man was rescued.
The defendants have to answer for negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm in the appeal proceedings. Just over a year ago, the Grimma district court acquitted the men. The public prosecutor's office and the co-plaintiffs appealed against this. A decision could be announced on December 18.
