Police - Fatal getaway: driver was wanted by warrant

A driver, who died in a car accident while fleeing from the police in the Main-Kinzig-District, had been wanted by a warrant prior to the incident. A police spokesperson in Offenbach confirmed this on Wednesday. The warrant was reportedly issued due to a traffic violation.

A patrol had wanted to stop the 39-year-old's car on Tuesday because at least one passenger was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver reportedly ignored the police's stop signals and drove off at high speed. During the escape, the driver is said to have overtaken several vehicles at high speed and disregarded a red traffic light. Eventually, the car collided with a road barrier. The driver died at the scene of the accident.

A 19-year-old passenger and two female passengers sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospitals. According to the spokesperson, their condition was not life-threatening. The police investigation, including the exact reasons for the escape, is ongoing. A forensic expert is set to reconstruct the accident.
