Ore Mountains - Fatal bus accident: bus driver under investigation

Following the serious bus accident in the Ore Mountains in which a ten-year-old died, the public prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the bus driver. The 45-year-old is being investigated on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and negligent bodily harm, a spokeswoman for the Chemnitz public prosecutor's office told the German Press Agency on Wednesday. She was unable to give any further details.

On Tuesday morning, a bus carrying schoolchildren in Sehmatal, south of Chemnitz, collided sideways with a winter service vehicle and then crashed head-on into a tree. A ten-year-old boy died at the scene of the accident and 13 other people, including eleven children, suffered injuries.

The bus driver was freed from the wreckage by the fire department using heavy equipment. The 45-year-old and a 59-year-old female passenger suffered serious injuries. Their condition is unchanged, but not life-threatening, a police spokesperson said on Wednesday on request.

Meanwhile, investigations into the cause of the accident are continuing. The two vehicles involved have been impounded, the police spokesman said. An expert is also being called in to determine the cause of the accident.

The day after the devastating accident, the Saxon state government's victim support officer offered her help to those involved. According to a statement, Iris Kloppich said that her employees were available as guides to provide advice and arrange support services. "My thoughts are with the parents, relatives and friends of the child who was killed, who are having to cope with such a stroke of fate in the midst of the festive pre-Christmas period."
