Severe weather warning - Fanzone Frankfurt remains closed due to thunderstorms

Due to expected heavy thunderstorms, the Frankfurt fan zone will remain closed the entire Saturday. The city of Frankfurt announced this at noon. The Tourismus+Congress GmbH, as the organizer, along with the security authorities, have assessed the situation with the German Weather Service in the past few hours. "They come to the conclusion that the Frankfurt fan zone cannot be securely operated under these forecasts," it was stated.

The EM quarterfinals of the German football national team against Denmark take place on Saturday evening (21.00 hours/ZDF and MagentaTV). In addition, heavy thunderstorms and hail are threatening in Hessen from the evening.

Heavy rainstorm announced

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), heavy rain is expected to spread extensively from late evening hours, bringing significant hail. In a few hours, up to 40 to 60 liters per square meter could therefore fall from the sky. Severe storms to gale-force winds with speeds of up to 100 to 120 kilometers per hour could sweep through Hessen, according to the forecast. Extreme weather with up to 100 liters per square meter is also not ruled out.

Since various precautions need to be taken to secure the event area of the Frankfurt fan zone and ensure continued operation on the following days, the area along the Main remains closed the entire day. The Frankfurt fan zone, a 1.4 kilometer large area, is open daily from 13.00 hours. It offers space for 30,000 visitors. Normally, all EM matches are broadcast on large screens there.

Info on the Frankfurt fan zone

Despite the ZDF and MagentaTV airing the EM quarterfinals of the German football national team against Denmark in Frankfurt am Main on Saturday evening, the heavy thunderstorms and severe weather conditions have led to the closure of the Frankfurt fan zone. The closure is necessary due to the impending hail and storms with speeds up to 120 kilometers per hour, as forecasted by the German Weather Service. This situation has forced the Tourismus+Congress GmbH and security authorities to make a tough decision, affecting over 30,000 soccer fans who usually enjoy the matches in the large fan zone. The city of Hesse, Germany, has been under weather advisories, including threats of thunderstorms and heavy rain for the entire day.
