Followers of Werder Bremen have chosen midfielder Romano Schmid as the top player of the year in a poll. The Bundesliga squad declared on Monday that around 7,000 fans out of around 16,000 poll-takers on the team's WhatsApp channel selected the 24-year-old Austrian. The nimble international player, who is also a member of the neighboring country's squad at the European Championship, netted four goals and set up seven assists in 33 league matches.
Goalkeeper Michael Zetterer received around 3,500 votes in second place, while forward Justin Njinmah got 2,000 votes. Last year, people chose the current Borussia Dortmund player Niclas Füllkrug as their favorite.
