Family of the hostage-taker is known to the youth welfare office

The family of the hostage-taker from Hamburg Airport is known to the youth welfare office of the district of Stade. "For reasons of social data protection and out of consideration for the child's welfare, we cannot provide any further background information at this point," a spokesperson for the authorities told dpa on Monday.

The man abducted his four-year-old daughter from her mother's apartment in Stade on Saturday. At the airport in Hamburg, he broke through a barrier with his car and drove onto the airfield. According to the police, he fired shots from a gun and set off two incendiary devices. After a war of nerves lasting more than 18 hours, the 35-year-old handed the child over to the police on Sunday and was arrested without resistance.

The police did not want to say where the mother and child are currently and how the four-year-old girl is doing for reasons of privacy. However, the child was provided with food and drink during the 18-hour hostage-taking on the airport tarmac.

According to the public prosecutor's office in Stade, the man had already been convicted of taking the child in the past. He also no longer had custody of the daughter.

The man's history with air traffic violations due to the airport incident is currently under investigation by the aviation authorities. Despite the significant disruption to air traffic, no crimes related to aviation safety were reported during the incident.
