Pre-trial detention - Family member allegedly cut off man's penis and testicles

Due to a 66-year-old man from Herne having his Penis and testicles removed four months ago, a close family member is currently in investigative detention for attempted murder. The motive of the 32-year-old from Dortmund was not disclosed by the police on Wednesday as they referred to ongoing investigations, according to a police spokesperson.

At the end of February, the 66-year-old was found injured in his house in the Ruhrgebiet city. The persistent barking of his dog during the night of February 27 had alerted the neighbors. The fire department opened the door for the police as they could hear banging noises, and found the critically injured man.

The crime initially puzzled the police: The 66-year-old was unable to make clear statements about the crime immediately after it occurred and was subsequently unfit for interrogation, as reported by the police at the time. The severed genitals or a murder weapon were not found at the scene then.

According to police and prosecutor statements on Tuesday, extensive investigations led to the arrest of the 32-year-old man from Dortmund. He is a close family member. The exact relationship between the two was not disclosed.

The 32-year-old was identified through a DNA trace comparison. A judge issued the previously requested arrest warrant for attempted murder and grievous bodily harm. The investigations into the background of the crime continued, it was stated.
