Falling water levels on the Rhine, Moselle and Saar

Water levels on the Rhine, Moselle and Saar will fall at many gauges in the coming days. At the Koblenz gauge on the Middle Rhine, a slight rise back up to 5.70 meters is still possible on Tuesday, but the water level will remain below the peak of 5.80 meters reached on Monday, according to the flood forecasting service of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for the Environment. In addition, the water levels at all gauges are expected to fall over the course of the day. At 5.27 meters, the water level at the Mainz gauge also remained below the peak of 5.37 meters reached on Monday and the reported height of 5.50 meters.

Water levels on the Moselle are expected to fall from Tuesday until at least Friday, as less rain is expected in the coming days according to the flood control center. Although the water level at the Trier gauge is currently stagnating at around 6.50 meters, it is expected to fall below the 6.00 meter mark by Wednesday morning.

The water level is also falling on the Saar. The water level of 3.10 meters reached in Fremersdorf on Tuesday could fall to as low as 2.62 meters in the coming day.

Despite the falling water levels on the Rhine, Moselle, and Saar, the weather forecast predicts a potential storm approaching the region later this week. This storm could exacerbate the situation and potentially lead to another flood event. The flood control center has warned that the decrease in water levels on the Moselle might not last long, as the impending storm could cause a surge in water levels once again.
