Rain and thaw - Falling Rhine water levels: but a rise is possible again

Following the flooding caused by rain and thaw, the water levels of the Rhine are falling again. The flood forecasting center of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for the Environment announced on Monday that water levels on the Upper Rhine are expected to fall until Thursday. According to current forecasts, water levels are expected to rise again by the weekend.

The water levels on the Middle Rhine are also expected to fall by the middle of the week, it said. After that, water levels are also expected to stagnate or rise towards the weekend.

The German Weather Service (DWD) expects the weather in Rhineland-Palatinate to clear up initially in the Palatinate on Tuesday, otherwise it will probably be cloudy to overcast - initially mostly without precipitation and at most light rain in the north. From midday onwards, the precipitation may spread across the whole state. Only in the Vorderpfalz will it probably remain dry until the evening. Temperatures will be between three and five degrees, and up to seven degrees on the Rhine.

In Hesse, the DWD is expecting some clearing in the south on Tuesday, otherwise it will be mostly cloudy. Initially, it will be mostly free of precipitation, with only light rain expected in the north. From midday onwards, the precipitation may spread from the northwest to the whole country. Temperatures will be between three and six degrees, in the higher mountain regions around two degrees.
