Faber Appointed as New Head of Defense Committee

Following the military development, the Defense Committee has gained significance. It has a fresh chairperson now, as Strack-Zimmermann is shifting to the European Parliament.

Marcus Faber, an FDP representative in the German Bundestag representing Stendal, Sachsen-Anhalt, has been selected as the new head of the Defense Committee. The Bundestag revealed this news on a Wednesday, taking over from previous chairwoman Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP) who moved on to join the European Parliament. Faber has served as a Bundestag member since October 2017. Prior to this new appointment, he served as the defense policy spokesperson for his party but stepped down in 2022 due to a public spat with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) during his appearance in the Defense Committee.

The Defense Committee is made up of 38 members where their duties include monitoring the Ministry of Defense and the Bundeswehr. They are also involved in approving the defense budget and authorizing the purchase of military equipment and supplies. The FDP party can put forward a candidate for this position.
