Exports in the southwest continue to decline
The export economy in the southwest continues to weaken. From January to September, companies exported goods worth 187.2 billion euros. This was announced by the State Statistical Office in Stuttgart on Tuesday on the basis of preliminary figures. This is around 11 billion euros and therefore 5.6 percent less than in the same period last year.
According to the statisticians, the decline was mainly due to the slump in foreign business in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The USA was by far the most important destination country. Goods worth 27.3 billion euros went there, 8.3 percent less than in the same period last year. China came in second with goods worth 14.3 billion euros. This was 5 percent less than in the same period last year. It was followed by France, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
Goods worth 174.5 billion euros were imported into Baden-Württemberg from January to September, 12.9 percent less than in the same period last year.
The economic situation in the southwest, as evident from the declining foreign trade, raises concerns for the region's overall growth. The decrease in foreign trade, particularly in the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors, has impacted the country's export economy negatively.
