- Explosive in apartment - Suspect released
A 40-year-old man, in whose apartment the police found a small amount of explosives during a search, has been released from custody. The evidence currently does not suffice to apply for a warrant for his arrest, as a spokesperson for the Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office stated upon request.
The man is suspected of having been involved in an armed robbery of two YouTube influencers from the Querdenker movement on July 25 in Berlin-Kreuzberg. According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, there are indications that the 40-year-old is a member of the left-wing extremist Antifa.
No specific details about the explosives found
With the search of the man's apartment in Berlin-Weißensee, investigators hoped to find evidence of his involvement in the robbery. This was not successful, according to the authorities. Instead, some explosives were found. The spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor's Office did not provide specific details about the type and amount of explosives "for tactical investigative reasons."
Due to the find, around 200 people had to leave nearby houses on Wednesday. The explosives were destroyed by specialists from the State Criminal Police Office, as the police reported.
The investigation into the armed robbery has led the authorities to the Office of the Prosecutor, as they believe the 40-year-old might face charges related to his alleged membership in a left-wing extremist group. The office is actively monitoring the situation, considering the potential links between the man and the robbery.
Despite the release of the suspect, the Office of the Prosecutor maintains its vigilance, as the discovery of explosives in his apartment adds a new dimension to the ongoing investigation.
