Processes - Explosion in fashion store - trial against father and son
Around nine months after a serious explosion in a fashion store in the pedestrian zone of Eschweiler near Aachen, the trial against the two owners begins on Wednesday (9.00 a.m.). The 22 and 56-year-old men are on trial at Aachen District Court for 13 counts of attempted murder, 15 counts of grievous bodily harm and particularly serious arson. More than 50 witnesses have been summoned.
The accused are father and son, they are said to have had a joint plan to commit the crime. The prosecution accuses the 22-year-old of pouring accelerant into the commercial and residential building and later setting it alight. It was supposed to look like an explosion caused by a gas leak, for example, which was covered by the insurance.
The explosion during the night shattered windows, walls collapsed and a fire broke out. Some of the residents in the apartments suffered life-threatening injuries. 200 rescuers were deployed. The property damage is said to have amounted to more than two million euros.
The crime scene is located in a small street in the pedestrian zone of Eschweiler. Nine months later, Neustraße is decorated for Christmas. The explosion house is covered from top to bottom with tarpaulins. The ceiling on the first floor is supported by steel girders. Some stores in the neighborhood had only just reopened after the flood disaster in July 2021. Some are now closed again.
The current defendants quickly became the focus of the investigators during the investigation. The men, of German and Iraqi nationality, were remanded in custody a few days after the crime. In the event of a conviction, a prison sentence of several years is possible. It is not ruled out that the men will be imprisoned for life.
