Explosion at Chad military armory kills nine individuals
Airborne footage filmed at N'Djamena's international airport captures a burst of fire and debris scattering in the darkness.
Pictures from Maxar Technologies' satellite surveillance reveal 17 buildings in the munitions warehouse obliterated.
Upon examination, the destroyed structures from the blast are scattered across the compound, in two separate groups stationed at opposite ends.
It remains uncertain if a series of explosions took place, potentially annihilating all buildings, or if just one occurred. The explosion's origin also remains ambiguous at present.
A local resident, Moustapha Adoum Mahamat, chatted with Reuters post-blast. He stated, "Our home felt like it was under attack with bullets. Then we saw a great inferno at the military camp, smoke, and objects exploding in the air." He further added, "We witnessed artillery passing over us."
The blast occurred mere kilometers from the nation's principal international airport; authorities affirm that it sustained no damage.
Chad's president, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, pledged to look into the reason behind the fire at the munitions depot's origins.
