Youth policy - Expert: Money alone is not enough to combat youth violence

Alexander Freier-Winterwerb, the SPD parliamentary group's youth policy spokesperson, is convinced that money alone will not put an end to youth violence. Instead, he believes it is important to involve parents in conflicts at schools, such as the one in Neukölln on Monday. "I have the feeling that in Germany, and especially in Berlin, we have the idea that when you have social conflicts, you spend money, hire people and hope that these conflicts will be resolved immediately," he told RBB-Inforadio on Wednesday morning. In his opinion, however, this does not work so quickly.

"For example, we've put an incredible amount of money into the system as a result of the youth violence summit, and that's now having an impact. We are strengthening security and so on and so forth. What matters to me is to start a debate about what responsibility parents also have," said the SPD MP.

There are simply a large number of parents who are not interested in their children. "They sit them in front of the TV or send them outside." As a result, children naturally never learn how to deal with crises or difficult situations in a sensible way without using violence to solve them. "That's also a key issue."

On Monday, there was a brawl at a school in Neukölln in which pupils, teachers and police officers were injured. The principal, who wanted to separate the young people involved in the brawl, was pushed and broke a finger, as the police reported on Tuesday. Other teachers and police officers were also attacked. Pupils sprayed pepper spray, so that a total of 49 children, young people and teachers suffered injuries and were treated by paramedics.
