Following the explosion in an apartment building in Essen that left one person dead and one seriously injured, investigators hope to find clues to the cause in the burnt-out building. A police spokeswoman said that an expert would be able to inspect the building with the fire investigators for the first time this Tuesday. Traces are to be secured in order to reconstruct what happened and determine the cause. According to the police, an accident is just as likely a cause as deliberate or negligent arson. The questioning of witnesses is also ongoing.

On Saturday evening, a detonation occurred in the first floor apartment, which was heated with gas. The house and the adjacent street were devastated. Large parts of the house were ablaze. A resident jumped out of the window from the second floor. She was seriously injured with burns and was taken to hospital, where her condition stabilized.

The resident of the first floor apartment was initially missing on Sunday. It was later discovered that a dead person was lying under the rubble. The identification of the body is still ongoing, it was reported on Tuesday.
