Thuringia's anti-loneliness initiative for the elderly is set to expand further this summer. The districts of Gotha and Saalfeld-Rudolstadt will now be added to the 12 existing communities that already implement this program. This brings the total number of participating districts and free cities to 14.

"Agathe - Thuringian Initiative against Loneliness in Old Age" has been around for three years, aiming to help seniors live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. Specially-trained staff play a crucial role in this, visiting seniors at home and assisting them with daily tasks like doctor trips or applications for housing benefits and aids. In the two new districts, 13 of these trained individuals will begin their work. This will bring the total number of advisors in the country to 69 come summertime.

Social Minister Heike Werner (Left) explained that the ultimate goal is to implement the program in all Thuringian districts and free cities, benefiting every senior citizen and senior. For this year, a budget of 3.8 million euros has been set aside for this purpose in the state budget. This funding will help maintain existing projects and launch new ones.

The program has also been chosen to represent Germany at the Expo 2025 Osaka in Japan, as revealed by the Ministry.
