Exhibition on Chaim Soutine at the top of the critics' favorites
An exhibition on the avant-garde painter Chaim Soutine, who is little known in Germany, at the Kunstsammlung NRW (K20) is this year's frontrunner among art critics in North Rhine-Westphalia. The show received the most mentions in the "Best Exhibition" category in the annual NRW museum survey conducted by "Welt am Sonntag".
The Jewish-Belarusian painter Soutine (1893-1943) remained an outsider in the Parisian art scene throughout his life. His works have not been shown in Germany for decades. Two other presentations in the art collection on Isaac Julien and Etel Adnan were also praised. The exhibitions on Chaim Soutine and Isaac Julien can be seen until January 14. A total of eight art critics were asked about the tops and flops in the NRW art scene.
The Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, which opens a spectacular new presentation of its extensive collection on Tuesday, is currently also highly regarded by critics. The museum is being praised for the exhibition "More Light", which was curated by art expert and writer Florian Illies.
There is also applause for "the great sequence" of the new collection presentation and Director Felix Krämer, who manages the balancing act of "attracting a wide audience without lowering the quality". However, Krämer also received two "Lemons of the Year": for his handling of the photo archive of the Rhineland art scene (AFORK) and for an exhibition on Refik Anadol, who uses artificial intelligence to create monumental data images.
The critics once again awarded three "lemons" for the events surrounding the planned Deutsches Fotoinstitut. They criticized "expensive expert opinions, shady decisions, vague plans" and the "waste of taxpayers' money", which has already earned the as yet non-existent photo institute an entry in the taxpayers' association's black book. The dispute over the location of the future photo institute was won by Düsseldorf, with Essen losing out.
Critics see the Kunsthalle Bielefeld, the Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen, the Skulpturenmuseum Marl and the Osthaus-Museum in Hagen as "museums on the upswing".
Visitors to the Kunstsammlung NRW (K20) in Düsseldorf should not miss the highly acclaimed exhibition on Chaim Soutine, as it features his avant-garde paintings, which are not frequently exhibited in Germany. For art enthusiasts who appreciate museums, a trip to the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf is also recommended, as it currently hosts an esteemed presentation of its extensive collection, titled "More Light."
