Excavator damages gas pipe: kindergarten evacuated

A kindergarten in the district of Stade has been evacuated due to a gas pipe being hit. The accident in Horneburg occurred on Wednesday during construction work for the fiber optic expansion, as the police announced at midday. The worker called the emergency services immediately.

In addition to the daycare center, parts of an elementary school and surrounding residential buildings were also evacuated. The affected school and daycare children were housed in another part of the elementary school until then. The parents were informed.

Emergency services from the fire department and workers from the municipal utility company then repaired the leak. No one was injured. After around two hours, children who had not been picked up by their parents were able to return to the daycare center.

The worker's quick action of calling the emergency services prevented potential hazards associated with the gas leak. Since the pipe damage was an emergency, the evacuation of the kindergarten and nearby buildings was necessary to ensure safety.
