Ex-national player moves from Wolfsburg to Bremerhaven
Former national team player Sebastian Furchner will leave the Grizzlys Wolfsburg prematurely after almost one and a half years as team manager and move to rival Fischtown Pinguins in Bremerhaven. The 41-year-old is leaving the club with immediate effect, as the Grizzlys announced on Monday. "Family reasons and a new sporting challenge that presented itself were the decisive factors," it said in a statement.
Furchner will start his new job on January 1 of next year. "The challenge that has presented itself to me is very attractive and offers me an opportunity that I would not have expected so quickly and that will probably not arise again in this form so soon," Furchner was quoted as saying in a statement from Bremerhaven. He also played for Bremerhaven between 2001 and 2002. Furchner, who played in the German Ice Hockey League for more than 20 years and suited up for the Grizzlies between 2008 and 2022, joined Wolfsburg's management team for the 2022/2023 season. During his time as a player, he was runner-up six times and won the cup twice. Born in Kaufbeuren, he is the third-best goalscorer in DEL history with 302 goals and the player with the second-most competitive games with 1115.
Despite his successful tenure with the Grizzlys Wolfsburg, Sebastian Furchner's love for ice hockey and family obligations led him to pursue a new challenge in DEL. Furchner's previous stint in Bremerhaven, playing in the league from 2001 to 2002, could potentially be revisited as he prepares to join the city's ice hockey team again.
