Every fifth heating system in Saxony-Anhalt is less than five years old

A good one in five heating systems in Saxony is less than five years old. This means that the proportion has risen significantly in recent years - from 15.3% in 2019 to 22.8% this year. This is the result of a regional analysis of the study "How does Germany heat?" by the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW), which was made available to the German Press Agency in advance.

The proportion of particularly old heating systems with a service life of more than 25 years has also fallen slightly - from 26.7 percent to 25.0 percent. On average, heating systems in homes in the country are 14.2 years old (2019: 17.4).

According to the association, there are major differences between the various technologies: oil central heating systems are 16.4 years old on average in Saxony-Anhalt, gas central heating systems are 14.6 years old and other heating systems are 12.8 years old.

Additional heating sources are used in just under a third of homes in Saxony-Anhalt. The fireplace remains particularly popular (48.2 percent), followed by direct electric heating systems such as fan heaters (20.3 percent) and coal stoves (15.3 percent).

With the Building Energy Act and municipal heat planning, the German government, made up of the SPD, Greens and FDP, wants to ensure that heating in Germany becomes more climate-friendly. The law aims to gradually make heating in Germany more climate-friendly by replacing oil and gas heating systems.

It stipulates that every new heating system installed in future must be powered by 65% renewable energy. The law will initially only apply to new-build areas from 2024. For existing buildings, municipal heating planning is to be the linchpin, which is to be introduced gradually.

Consumers in Saxony-Anhalt are becoming increasingly mindful of their energy consumption, as the rise in the number of new heating systems under five years old indicates. This shift towards newer, more energy-efficient systems can contribute positively to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, thereby aiding in the fight against climate change, and ultimately, improving living conditions for future generations.

Given the new building energy regulations, climate-conscious consumers in Saxony-Anhalt will soon have access to heating systems powered by a minimum of 65% renewable energy, which will contribute to a greener and more sustainable living environment.
