Even one cup of mulled wine can be too much

Whether at the Christmas party or the Christmas market, alcohol is a must for many people. If you still want to get behind the wheel, it's better not to drink at all. For all those who already have gaps in their memory, here are the current alcohol limits.

Brrr, it's cold. Nevertheless, a little trip to the Christmas market is a must. Today or tomorrow. And then drive home by car. Surely a cup of mulled wine to warm you up won't do any harm? Yes, it can.

TÜV Thüringen advises everyone who wants to drive a car, e-scooter or motorcycle afterwards to drink non-alcoholic beverages, even at Christmas time. Even one mulled wine can be too much.

For example: depending on the recipe and alcohol content, the blood alcohol concentration of a man weighing 80 kilograms can rise above the critical limit of 0.3 per mille after just one cup of mulled wine.

This means that if you drive unsafely on the road or are involved in an accident, you could face penalties from this level and your driving license could be at risk.

Fines and severe penalties after just a few cups

The 0.5 per mille limit applies when driving a car, motorcycle or e-scooter without any signs of impairment. From 0.5 per mille alcohol in the blood, first-time offenders face a one-month driving ban, a 500 euro fine and two points in Flensburg.

Repeat offenders will be fined 1000 euros the second time and 1500 euros the third time. In addition, there is a three-month driving ban and two points. According to TÜV Thüringen, this limit can be reached after just a second mulled wine.

From 1.1 per mille in the blood, you are considered absolutely unfit to drive and therefore commit a criminal offense if you drive. This can result in three points, revocation of your driving license and a fine or prison sentence. This level can be reached after just the fourth mulled wine.

For novice drivers on probation and anyone under the age of 21, the catalog of fines even stipulates a zero blood alcohol limit. Anyone who violates this can expect a fine of 250 euros and a point in Flensburg.

Riding a bike drunk - not a good idea either

According to the German Cyclists' Association, you also risk losing your license if you are drunk on a bike. The limit for absolute unfitness to drive and therefore a criminal offense is 1.6 per mille. But even below this level, cyclists can be charged if they show signs of impairment.

If you want to celebrate with alcohol, it's best to think about a safe journey home beforehand - for example by public transport or cab. If you are carpooling, you should agree who will stay sober and get behind the wheel.
