Europol and BKA announce a major blow against international cybercrime.
In total, ten arrest warrants were issued across the globe. Reportedly, the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) seized a property worth €69 million from a server operator. Additionally, crypto-currencies valued over €70 million were blocked by the BKA.
The BKA added that the six software families they targeted during the international crackdown against cybercriminals functioned as "opener" programs, allowing other malware to infiltrate computer systems. These attacks aimed to obtain sensitive information like usernames and passwords or to lock the attacked systems/networks using ransomware. During ransomware attacks, hackers encrypt the data of targeted businesses, individuals, or authorities and then demand payment in exchange for releasing the data.
The BKA mentioned that the Central Office for the Fight against Internet Crime (ZIT) in Germany also participated in this operation. Globally, 16 locations were searched including Armenia, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Ukraine. Evidence was collected during these raids.
