European League: Rhein-Neckar Löwen reach main round
The Rhein-Neckar Löwen have reached the main round of the European League ahead of schedule. The German handball club won 39:30 (20:17) against Benfica Lisbon on Tuesday evening and, after its fourth win in four games, can no longer be displaced from one of the top two places in the tough preliminary round Group A.
In front of 2956 spectators in Heidelberg's SNP Dome, the German internationals Juri Knorr and Jannik Kohlbacher were the top scorers with nine goals each for coach Sebastian Hinze's team, which initially trailed 5:7 (6th minute) in a fast-paced encounter. However, thanks to saves by the strong goalkeeper Joel Birlehm, the home side led 20:17 at the break.
The Lions continued to rely on their goalkeeper after the break. The cup winners repeatedly carved out clear chances in attack and pulled 27:20 ahead in the 39th minute. Mannheim then defended this lead without any problems.
The Rhein-Neckar Lions' impressive performance in the European League has earned them a spot in the main round, as they currently lead Group A with four consecutive wins. The Lions secured their place in the main round with a dominating 39-30 victory over Benfica Lisbon in the preliminary round.
